Absalom acquires chariots, horses, and fifty men to run before him, and rises early each day to intercept people bringing disputes to the king, sympathetically suggesting their cases would receive better justice if only he were judge, “so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.” After four years of this calculated campaign, Absalom asks David’s permission to travel to Hebron under the pretense of fulfilling a vow, but actually to launch his “conspiracy,” “qesher” in Hebrew, sending spies throughout Israel’s tribes to declare him king at the sound of the trumpet.
David, learning of this widespread rebellion, flees Jerusalem with his household and loyal followers rather than face a siege in the city, weeping as he crosses the brook Kidron. His faithful servants, including foreign allies like Ittai the Gittite, insist on remaining loyal to David despite the danger, refusing to abandon him even when offered the chance to stay safely behind.
David sends the priests Zadok and Abiathar back to Jerusalem with the ark, trusting that if he finds favor with the Lord, He will bring him back to see it again, but submitting humbly to whatever God decides otherwise. Learning that his trusted counselor Ahithophel has joined Absalom’s conspiracy, David prays specifically that the Lord would turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness, and sends his friend Hushai back to Jerusalem to secretly counter Ahithophel’s advice and report Absalom’s plans back to him.
David’s genuine humility during this devastating betrayal, submitting his fate entirely to God’s will rather than desperately clinging to power, contrasts sharply with Absalom’s calculated, years-long manipulation to steal it. Even losing his throne, David’s posture toward God remained one of trust rather than panic or bitterness.
