Amnon, David’s firstborn son, becomes obsessed with his beautiful half-sister Tamar, so much that he makes himself sick over her. Following a cousin’s deceptive advice, Amnon pretends to be ill and asks David to send Tamar to prepare food for him personally. Once alone with her, Amnon violates her despite her desperate pleading, and immediately afterward, his obsessive desire turns to intense hatred, and he throws her out in disgrace.
Devastated and left “desolate,” “shamem” in Hebrew, Tamar tears her royal robe and puts ashes on her head, mourning openly. Her brother Absalom takes her into his own house, advising her to remain silent for now, though his own hatred toward Amnon begins simmering. David, though angry when he hears of this, takes no real action to discipline or punish his firstborn son.
Absalom nurses his hatred for two full years before inviting all the king’s sons to a sheep-shearing feast, specifically requesting that Amnon attend as well. Once Amnon is merry with wine, Absalom’s servants kill him on his command, avenging Tamar’s violation completely. The other sons flee in terror, and initial reports reach David that all his sons have been killed, until Jonadab clarifies that only Amnon is dead, exactly as he had suspected since Absalom’s hatred had been evident since Tamar’s violation. Absalom flees to his grandfather’s territory, and David mourns deeply for his son Amnon while also longing for Absalom, now living in exile.
David’s failure to properly address Amnon’s crime against Tamar, despite his own anger, created a vacuum that Absalom eventually filled with calculated, patient revenge instead. This tragic chapter shows how a parent’s unwillingness to confront serious wrongdoing within their own family doesn’t prevent consequences. It simply delays and often worsens them.
