The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Land” it comes from the Hebrew Word “erets” which means “land, earth.”
Elisha weeps over a coming atrocity he can already see clearly in a foreign official’s future. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 2 Kings 8.
The Shunammite woman, warned earlier by Elisha of a coming seven-year famine, returns from dwelling temporarily in Philistine “land,” “erets” in Hebrew, to find her property has been taken over in her absence. Providentially, she arrives at the exact moment Gehazi is recounting to the king how Elisha once raised her son from the dead, and the king, moved by this remarkable coincidence, orders all her land and its produce restored to her immediately.
Elisha travels to Damascus, where Benhadad, king of Syria, is sick, and sends Hazael to ask Elisha whether he will recover. Elisha tells Hazael to report that he will recover, though he actually will die, and then weeps, since he foresees the devastating harm Hazael will inflict on Israel as its future king, dashing children and ripping open pregnant women. Hazael returns and, the very next day, murders Benhadad by smothering him with a wet cloth, becoming king of Syria himself exactly as Elijah had been instructed to anoint him years earlier.
The chapter then reviews the reigns of Jehoram and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, both marrying into Ahab’s wicked family line through Athaliah, and both following the idolatrous practices of the northern kingdom rather than the faithfulness of their ancestor David, setting the stage for the dramatic events soon to unfold as God’s judgment against Ahab’s entire corrupting influence finally begins closing in.
Elisha’s tears upon seeing Hazael’s violent future reveal genuine compassion even for the innocent victims of a kingdom that wasn’t even his own. Prophetic insight in this chapter brought real grief rather than detached prediction, showing that foreseeing coming judgment never made witnessing its human cost any easier to bear.
