Jehoram becomes king of Israel, doing evil though not as badly as his father Ahab, since he removes the image of Baal his father made. When Moab rebels against Israel’s tribute demands, Jehoram allies with Jehoshaphat of Judah and the king of Edom to march against them, but after circling through the wilderness for seven days, their combined armies and livestock find no “water,” “mayim” in Hebrew, threatening the entire campaign with disaster before a single battle is fought.
Jehoshaphat asks if there is a prophet of the Lord present, and Elisha is found. Though initially reluctant to help Jehoram because of his father’s idolatry, Elisha agrees for Jehoshaphat’s sake, calling for a minstrel to play while the Spirit of the Lord comes upon him. He instructs them to dig ditches throughout the valley, promising that without wind or rain, the valley will be filled with water for the armies and livestock.
The next morning, water flows in from Edom, filling the land, and when the Moabites see it reflecting red like blood in the morning sun, they mistakenly believe the three allied kings have turned on each other and rush in for easy plunder, only to be met by a fully prepared, victorious Israelite army. Israel devastates Moab’s cities and land, until the king of Moab, in desperation, offers his own firstborn son as a burnt offering on the city wall, and Israel, disturbed by this act, withdraws and returns to their own land.
Elisha’s willingness to help despite his personal reluctance toward Jehoram, purely out of respect for godly Jehoshaphat, shows how one faithful person’s presence can extend blessing even to a larger, more compromised alliance. God’s provision of water in an empty valley demonstrates real power arriving through unlikely, practical means rather than dramatic spectacle.
