Jehoiakim, installed by Egypt after his brother’s brief reign, becomes Babylon’s vassal for three years before rebelling, prompting Nebuchadnezzar to send raiding bands from Babylon, Syria, Moab, and Ammon against Judah, exactly as the Lord had commanded, to destroy Judah for the accumulated sins of Manasseh, including the innocent blood he shed, which the Lord would not pardon.
Jehoiachin succeeds his father Jehoiakim but reigns only three months before Nebuchadnezzar himself besieges Jerusalem, and Jehoiachin surrenders. Nebuchadnezzar carries off the temple and palace treasures, exactly as had been prophesied to Hezekiah generations earlier, and takes Jehoiachin, the queen mother, his officials, and ten thousand of Judah’s leading citizens, craftsmen, and soldiers into “captivity,” “galuth” in Hebrew, leaving only the poorest people of the land behind.
Nebuchadnezzar installs Mattaniah, Jehoiachin’s uncle, as king, renaming him Zedekiah, but he too does evil in the Lord’s sight, until finally, “through the anger of the LORD,” Zedekiah rebels against Babylon as well, setting the stage for the final, devastating siege and destruction that will unfold in the very next chapter, bringing Judah’s long, troubled monarchy to its ultimate, tragic conclusion.
This chapter traces Judah’s steady, humiliating decline from a semi-independent kingdom into a completely subjugated province, its treasures and leading citizens progressively stripped away in successive waves. Each new king’s brief, compromised reign shows a nation increasingly unable to control its own destiny, exactly as generations of accumulated unfaithfulness had ultimately guaranteed.
