Josiah gathers all the elders, priests, prophets, and people together, reading the entire book of the covenant aloud to them, and makes a solemn covenant before the Lord to walk after Him, keeping His commandments with all his heart and soul, and the people join in this covenant as well. Josiah then systematically purges every trace of idolatry, removing vessels made for Baal from the temple, burning them outside Jerusalem, breaking down the houses of male prostitutes, and defiling Topheth, where children had been sacrificed to Molech.
Josiah destroys the very altar Jeroboam had built at Bethel generations earlier, burning bones on it to defile it permanently, exactly fulfilling the prophecy delivered by the unnamed man of God centuries before. He removes mediums, wizards, images, and every abomination found throughout Judah and Jerusalem, thoroughly performing the words of the law written in the book Hilkiah had found.
Josiah commands the people to keep “the passover,” “pesach” in Hebrew, to the Lord exactly as written in the book of the covenant, and Scripture notes that no such Passover had been kept since the days of Israel’s judges, making Josiah’s celebration remarkably unique in its faithfulness to the actual written instructions. Despite these extraordinary reforms, God’s decision to bring judgment on Judah for Manasseh’s earlier sins remains unchanged, and the chapter closes with Josiah’s tragic death in battle against Pharaoh Necho at Megiddo, followed by the brief, troubled reign of his son Jehoahaz, quickly deposed by Egypt after only three months.
Josiah’s reforms stand as the most thorough religious cleansing in Judah’s entire history, yet even this remarkable faithfulness could not reverse the judgment already set in motion by generations of prior unfaithfulness. This sobering reality shows that while genuine repentance always matters deeply to God, it doesn’t necessarily erase every consequence already set into motion by accumulated national sin.
