Manasseh becomes king at just twelve years old and reigns fifty-five years, longer than any other king of Judah, yet does great evil, rebuilding the high places his father Hezekiah had destroyed, erecting altars for Baal, worshiping the host of heaven even within the temple itself, and making his own son pass through fire in pagan ritual, along with practicing witchcraft and consulting mediums, “provoking,” “ka’as” in Hebrew, the Lord to great anger.
God pronounces devastating judgment through His prophets, that He will bring such disaster on Jerusalem and Judah that both ears of anyone who hears it will tingle, wiping the city as one wipes a dish, turning it upside down. Manasseh sheds so much innocent blood that it fills Jerusalem from one end to the other, in addition to his own personal sin and leading Judah into sin as well.
Manasseh dies and is succeeded by his son Amon, who follows his father’s wicked example completely, forsaking the Lord entirely and worshiping the same idols. After only two years, Amon’s own servants conspire and kill him in his own house, though the people of the land execute these conspirators and make Amon’s young son Josiah king in his place, setting the stage for one of the most dramatic reform movements in Judah’s entire history.
Manasseh’s reign shows just how quickly one generation’s faithful reforms can be completely undone by the next, since Hezekiah’s own son actively rebuilt everything his father had worked to tear down. Even a king reigning fifty-five years, longer than any predecessor, ultimately left behind a legacy defined by devastating spiritual corruption rather than lasting stability.
