Ahaz becomes king of Judah and does not do what is right like his father, walking instead in the wicked ways of Israel’s kings, even making his son pass through fire in pagan ritual, following the abominable practices of the nations God had driven out. When Syria and Israel besiege Jerusalem together, Ahaz, terrified, sends silver and gold from the temple and palace to Tiglathpileser, king of Assyria, appealing for help as his “servant,” “ebed” in Hebrew, rather than trusting the Lord.
Assyria responds by attacking Syria, killing its king and capturing Damascus, providing the relief Ahaz sought, though at the cost of Judah’s increasing dependence on this powerful foreign empire. Traveling to meet the Assyrian king at Damascus, Ahaz sees a pagan altar there and, impressed by its design, sends the pattern back to Jerusalem, instructing the priest Urijah to build an identical altar in the temple, which he then uses in place of the original bronze altar, moving it aside to a secondary position.
Ahaz continues making unauthorized alterations to the temple’s furnishings and layout, apparently to please the king of Assyria or reflect these foreign religious influences he had encountered. The chapter closes noting Ahaz’s death, and his son Hezekiah, whose very different, faithful reign will unfold in stark contrast throughout the chapters that follow.
Ahaz’s fearful decision to seek Assyria’s protection rather than trusting God directly set a dangerous precedent of dependency that would haunt Judah for generations, while his casual redesign of the temple based on pagan influence shows how quickly compromised faith invites compromised worship. Fear-driven alliances, this chapter warns, always come with hidden, lasting costs.
