Amaziah becomes king of Judah, doing what is right, though not like David, since the high places remain. Once firmly established, he executes his father’s murderers, but spares their children, following the law of Moses that children should not be put to death for their father’s sins. Amaziah defeats Edom decisively in the Valley of Salt, but his success breeds dangerous “pride,” “gaon” in Hebrew, and he foolishly challenges Jehoash, king of Israel, to battle.
Jehoash warns him through a parable comparing Amaziah to a thistle demanding marriage with a great cedar, easily trampled by a passing beast, advising him to enjoy his glory and stay home rather than provoke unnecessary disaster, but Amaziah refuses to listen. Israel defeats Judah decisively, capturing Amaziah, breaking down part of Jerusalem’s wall, and plundering both the temple and palace treasuries. Amaziah is eventually killed in a conspiracy, and his son Azariah succeeds him.
Jeroboam the second becomes king over Israel, doing evil like his predecessors, yet God, seeing Israel’s deep affliction, uses him to restore Israel’s borders significantly, extending from Hamath to the Dead Sea, exactly as the prophet Jonah, son of Amittai, had foretold, since God had not yet decided to completely blot out Israel’s name from under heaven, and no one else was available to help them in their affliction.
Amaziah’s initial faithfulness after his father’s murder made his later prideful downfall all the more disappointing, showing how a genuine early victory can dangerously inflate confidence into reckless overreach. Jehoash’s wise, almost parental warning, if only Amaziah had heeded it, could have spared Judah significant humiliation and loss.
