Joash reigns forty years in Jerusalem, doing what is right in the Lord’s sight all the days he is instructed by Jehoiada the priest, though the high places are not removed and the people continue sacrificing there. Joash instructs the priests to use collected temple offerings to “repair,” “chazaq” in Hebrew, meaning to strengthen, the breaches and damage that had accumulated in the Lord’s house, likely from years of neglect and Athaliah’s sons plundering it for Baal worship.
When the priests fail to make sufficient progress after many years, Joash confronts Jehoiada directly, and they establish a more accountable system, a chest with a hole in its lid placed by the altar, where money brought to the Lord’s house could be collected, counted, and given directly to workmen overseeing the actual repairs, bypassing any need for detailed personal accounting since the workmen dealt faithfully. The temple is thoroughly repaired and restored to solid condition through this careful, transparent process.
The chapter closes noting that when Hazael, king of Syria, threatens Jerusalem, Joash strips the temple and palace treasuries of dedicated gifts and gold to pay him off rather than face war, persuading Hazael to withdraw. Eventually, Joash’s own servants conspire against him and kill him, and his son Amaziah succeeds him as king, closing out a reign that began with such promising reform but ended in tragic betrayal and, according to other biblical accounts, spiritual decline once his mentor Jehoiada had died.
Joash’s temple repair project shows real, practical faithfulness in restoring something long neglected, and the accountable system he established with Jehoiada demonstrates wise stewardship of resources dedicated to God. Yet his reign’s troubled ending is a sobering reminder that even promising spiritual leadership can falter without consistent, ongoing godly influence and accountability.
