When Athaliah, Ahaziah’s mother and Ahab’s own daughter, learns her son is dead, she moves to destroy all the royal seed of Judah herself, seizing the throne. However, Jehosheba, Ahaziah’s sister, secretly rescues the infant Joash from among the king’s sons about to be killed, hiding him and his nurse in a bedchamber, and later within the temple itself for six years while Athaliah reigns over the land.
In the seventh year, the priest Jehoiada organizes a careful, secret plan with the palace guards and Levites, bringing out young Joash, placing the crown on him, giving him the testimony, and anointing him king, with everyone clapping and shouting, “God save the king.” Athaliah, hearing the commotion, rushes to the temple and cries “Treason, Treason,” but Jehoiada has already commanded that she be taken outside and executed, ensuring she is not killed within the temple itself.
Jehoiada makes a “covenant,” “beriyth” in Hebrew, between the Lord, the king, and the people, that they would be the Lord’s people, and the people tear down Baal’s temple, breaking its altars and images, killing Baal’s priest before the altars. Jehoiada establishes proper order over the temple and the king’s house, and the people of the land rejoice, since the city is now quiet after Athaliah’s violent, illegitimate reign has finally been ended, and seven-year-old Joash begins to reign as Judah’s legitimate king.
Jehosheba’s courageous rescue of a single infant preserved David’s entire royal line during Athaliah’s murderous purge, a reminder that God’s covenant promises sometimes hang by remarkably thin, human threads of individual courage. This dramatic rescue ensured the Davidic line, and ultimately the promised Messiah’s lineage, survived this dangerous, nearly catastrophic moment.
