John, the elder, writes to the elect lady and her children, whom he loves in the “truth,” “aletheia” in Greek, and not he only, but also all those who have known the truth, for the truth’s sake which dwells in them, and shall be with them forever, grace, mercy, and peace being with them from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
John rejoices greatly that he found certain of her children walking in truth, as he received a commandment from the Father, and now he beseeches her, not as though he wrote a new commandment to her, but that which they had from the beginning, that they love one another, and this is love, that they walk after His commandments, this being the commandment, that as they have heard from the beginning, they should walk in it.
John warns that many deceivers have entered into the world, who do not confess Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, this being a deceiver and an antichrist, urging them to look to themselves, that they lose not the things they have accomplished, but receive a full reward, warning that whoever transgresses, and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ, does not have God, but he who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son, urging that if anyone comes to them, and does not bring this doctrine, they receive him not into their house, neither bid him godspeed, closing with a warm, personal note that though he has many things to write to them, he does not want to write with paper and ink, but trusts to come to them, and speak face to face, that their joy may be full.
John’s opening emphasis on truth combined with love establishes this brief letter’s central theme, that genuine Christian community requires both doctrinal faithfulness and authentic affection working together rather than either alone. His warning against welcoming those who deny Christ’s genuine incarnation shows that hospitality, while genuinely important, must still operate within appropriate boundaries protecting truth’s integrity within the community.
