Paul continues addressing the collection for the saints, noting he has already boasted to the Macedonians about the Corinthians’ readiness, which has stirred up many of them to give as well. He sends the brothers ahead to make sure the Corinthians’ gift is fully prepared beforehand, so that it appears as genuine generosity rather than something extracted reluctantly, reminding them of a farming principle, that whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, while whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
Paul instructs that each person give according to what they have purposed in their heart, “not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” The Greek word for cheerful is “hilaros,” related to genuine gladness and delight rather than reluctant obligation. He reassures them that God is able to make all grace abound toward them, so that having sufficiency in all things, they may abound in every good work, quoting the Psalms about the righteous person who scatters abroad and gives to the poor, whose righteousness endures forever.
Paul explains that God, who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, will also supply and multiply their resources, increasing the fruits of their righteousness, enriching them in everything for their own generosity, which through the apostles produces genuine thanksgiving to God. He describes this collection as accomplishing far more than simply meeting practical needs, since it also proves the Corinthians’ sincerity, causes many to glorify God, and produces genuine prayer and longing for them because of the exceeding grace of God evident in their lives. Paul closes with a burst of gratitude. “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”
Paul’s insistence that God loves a cheerful giver reframes generosity entirely around the heart’s posture rather than the amount given. A gift given reluctantly, purely out of pressure or obligation, misses the point Paul is making here just as much as withholding generosity altogether. The attitude behind the gift genuinely matters to God.
