Paul describes the remarkable generosity of the Macedonian churches, who, despite deep poverty and great trial of affliction, gave beyond their ability, begging earnestly for the privilege of participating in this collection for the poor saints in Jerusalem, giving themselves first to the Lord and then to Paul according to God’s will. Paul describes this collection consistently using the Greek word for grace, “charis,” treating the entire act of giving as an outworking of God’s own grace rather than mere obligation.
Paul encourages the Corinthians to excel in this same grace of giving, just as they already excel in faith, speech, knowledge, diligence, and love, pointing them not as a strict command, but testing the sincerity of their love by comparing it to the diligence of others. He reminds them of the ultimate example behind all generosity, “the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.”
Paul advises that it is appropriate for the Corinthians to finish what they had begun a year earlier, giving according to what they have, not what they do not have, so that there might be equality, the abundance of one supplying the need of another. He commends Titus and two other unnamed brothers who will help oversee this collection honestly and transparently, explaining that they are being careful to avoid any appearance of financial impropriety in handling this generous gift entrusted to them.
The Macedonians’ generosity, given in the middle of their own deep poverty and affliction, powerfully illustrates that genuine giving flows from the heart’s condition, not from a person’s actual financial surplus. Paul consistently frames this entire collection as grace in action, generosity being simply one more way God’s own grace becomes visible through His people.
