Paul urges the Corinthians, having these promises, to cleanse themselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. He pleads with them to receive him warmly, insisting he has wronged, corrupted, or defrauded no one, explaining he does not say this to condemn them, since he has already told them they are in his heart to live and die together, and that he takes great pride in them despite all his tribulation.
Paul describes his earlier anxiety, arriving in Macedonia with no rest, troubled on every side, fightings without and fears within, until God, “who comforteth those that are cast down,” comforted him by the arrival of Titus, and not merely by his arrival, but by the comfort Titus himself had received from the Corinthians, reporting their earnest desire, mourning, and fervent concern for Paul, filling him with even greater joy.
Paul explains that though his previous letter caused them sorrow, he does not regret it, since it produced genuine repentance rather than mere regret. He distinguishes carefully between two kinds of sorrow, “godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.” The Greek word for this sorrow is “lype.” Paul rejoices not that they were made sorry, but that their sorrow led to genuine repentance, producing earnestness, indignation at their own sin, fear, longing, zeal, and a desire to make things right, proving themselves clear in the matter, and Paul finds himself comforted, encouraged by Titus’s own joy and refreshed spirit among them.
Paul’s careful distinction between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow offers real clarity for anyone confused about the purpose of conviction. Godly sorrow doesn’t simply wallow in regret. It actively moves someone toward genuine change and repentance, while worldly sorrow, focused only on consequences or self-pity, ultimately leads nowhere productive at all.
