Paul urges the Corinthians, as fellow workers with God, not to receive His grace in vain, quoting Isaiah that now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation. He carefully avoids giving any offense that might discredit his ministry, and instead approaches every situation as a genuine minister of God, “in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,” listing an extensive range of hardships he has endured, stripes, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watchings, and fastings.
Paul continues this vivid list with striking paradoxes, “as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.” He expresses genuine affection for the Corinthians, explaining his heart has been opened wide to them, though he feels somewhat restricted by their own affections, and urges them, as to his own children, to open their hearts wide to him in return.
Paul then gives a direct, memorable instruction. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers,” “heterozygeo” in Greek, using the image of two mismatched animals forced to plow together. He asks a rapid series of rhetorical questions, what fellowship righteousness has with unrighteousness, what communion light has with darkness, insisting that believers, as the temple of the living God, must come out from among compromising influences and be separate, so that God can fully receive them as His own sons and daughters.
Paul’s extensive catalog of hardship isn’t presented as complaint, but as credential, proof of genuine, costly ministry rather than empty words. His warning against unequal yoking flows directly out of this same concern, that compromising relationships and alliances slowly pull believers away from the wholehearted devotion his own difficult life exemplified.
