Paul explains that he determined not to come to the Corinthians again in heaviness, since if he causes them sorrow, who would be left to bring him joy except the very ones he had grieved. He explains he wrote his previous, difficult letter with great affliction and anguish of heart, with many tears, not to grieve them, but so they would know the abundant love he has specifically for them.
Paul addresses the man previously disciplined for serious sin, explaining that the punishment inflicted by the majority is now sufficient, and it is time instead to “forgive,” “charizomai” in Greek, meaning to freely grant forgiveness, and comfort him, lest he be swallowed up with excessive sorrow. Paul urges the Corinthians to reaffirm their love toward him, and confirms his own full forgiveness as well, in the person of Christ, so that Satan would not gain any advantage over them, since “we are not ignorant of his devices.”
Paul describes his own anxious state of mind traveling to Troas, unable to find rest in his spirit because he did not find his brother Titus there with news of the Corinthians, so he departed for Macedonia instead. He closes this section with a triumphant image, thanking God who “always causeth us to triumph in Christ,” describing believers as spreading the sweet fragrance of the knowledge of Christ everywhere, a fragrance of life to those being saved and of death to those perishing, asking who is truly sufficient for such a calling.
Paul’s insistence that the church now forgive and comfort someone they had recently disciplined shows real spiritual maturity, discipline was never meant to be permanent punishment, but a means toward genuine restoration. Excessive, prolonged sorrow, Paul warns, can become its own kind of danger once genuine repentance has already taken place.
