Paul appeals to the Corinthians “by the meekness and gentleness of Christ,” addressing critics who accuse him of being bold only in his letters while appearing weak and unimpressive in person. He insists that though he walks in the flesh, he does not war according to the flesh, since “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds,” “ochyroma” in Greek, describing fortified places of resistance, casting down every proud argument and thought raised against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into obedience to Christ.
Paul insists that if anyone is confident they belong to Christ, they should recognize that Paul belongs to Christ just as certainly, and even if he boasts somewhat more of the authority the Lord gave him for building believers up rather than destroying them, he will not be ashamed of it. He clarifies he does not want to appear as though he is trying to intimidate them merely through letters, since his critics claim his physical presence is weak and his speech contemptible, though his letters seem weighty and powerful.
Paul insists that whatever he is in his letters when absent, he will be the same in deed when present, and refuses to compare or measure himself among those who commend themselves, since that reflects a lack of real wisdom. He insists on not boasting beyond his proper measure, hoping instead that as the Corinthians’ faith grows, his own area of ministry among them will be further enlarged, closing with a foundational principle he clearly values throughout this entire letter. “He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord: For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.”
Paul’s defense against accusations of being weak in person but bold only in writing reveals something important about spiritual authority, that it was never meant to rest on impressive personal presence or forceful rhetoric. His weapons, though not carnal, proved mighty enough to tear down real strongholds of resistance to the truth.
