Solomon blesses the assembly and recounts how God chose Jerusalem and chose David to be over Israel, though God told David that his son would build the house for His name instead, since David had been a man of war. Solomon stands before the altar in front of all Israel, spreads his hands toward heaven, and offers an extensive, heartfelt “prayer,” “tefillah” in Hebrew, acknowledging that even the heaven of heavens cannot truly contain God, much less this house, yet asking that God’s eyes remain open toward it continually.
Solomon prays for various future scenarios Israel might face, forgiveness when someone sins and repents toward this house, rain after drought when the people turn back to God, and even prays for the foreigner who comes from a distant land to pray toward this house, asking God to hear and answer him too, so that all peoples of the earth may know God’s name and fear Him just as Israel does.
Solomon prays that if Israel is ever carried away captive because of their sin, and they repent with all their heart in that foreign land, turning back toward this temple in prayer, God would hear from heaven and forgive them, maintaining their cause and that of His people Israel. Solomon closes asking God to arise into His resting place, clothing His priests with salvation, and asking Him to remember the mercies promised to David His servant, a fitting, humble conclusion to this magnificent dedication.
Solomon’s prayer remarkably anticipates Israel’s future failure and exile long before either had happened, already asking God for forgiveness and restoration whenever genuine repentance would eventually come. This forward-looking humility, built into the very dedication of God’s house, shows real spiritual maturity even at this moment of triumphant celebration.
