Solomon makes a bronze altar, twenty cubits square and ten cubits high, along with an enormous molten sea, a massive bronze basin resting on twelve bronze oxen arranged in groups facing the four directions, used for the priests’ ceremonial washing, holding three thousand baths of water. He also crafts ten smaller lavers for washing sacrificial items, five placed on each side of the temple.
Solomon makes ten golden “lampstands,” “menorah” in Hebrew, according to the prescribed pattern, along with the table of showbread, and countless golden bowls, snuffers, basins, spoons, and censers, all of pure gold, along with the golden doors of the inner sanctuary. Huram completes all this bronze work, casting it in clay molds in the plain of Jordan between Succoth and Zeredathah, in such enormous quantity that the weight of the bronze could not even be determined.
Solomon makes every vessel needed for the house of God, the golden altar, tables for showbread, lampstands and their lamps of pure gold, and all the various gold instruments needed for temple service, along with the priests’ silver trumpets. Once every piece of work Solomon commissioned for the Lord’s house is finished, everything is brought in and set in its proper place exactly as designed.
The sheer scale and craftsmanship poured into these furnishings, an enormous bronze sea, ten golden lampstands, countless gold vessels, reflects Israel’s genuine effort to honor God with their absolute best resources and skill. Excellence in these details mattered enough to warrant years of dedicated craftsmanship rather than a rushed or minimal effort.
