Josiah becomes king at eight years old, and in his eighth year, while still young, begins to seek the God of his father David, and by his twelfth year, begins purging Judah and Jerusalem of high places, groves, and idols, breaking down altars throughout the land, even extending his reforms into the territory of the former northern kingdom.
In his eighteenth year, having thoroughly cleansed the land and the temple, Josiah sends officials to repair the Lord’s house, and during this work, Hilkiah the priest discovers “the book of the law,” “sepher torah” in Hebrew, given by Moses, delivering it to Shaphan, who reads it and reports it to the king. Hearing the words of the law read aloud, Josiah tears his clothes in genuine distress, recognizing how far Judah had drifted from these long-neglected commandments, and sends his officials to inquire of the Lord concerning what they have found.
They consult Huldah the prophetess, who confirms that disaster is indeed coming upon Jerusalem because the people have forsaken the Lord, though because Josiah’s heart was tender and he humbled himself, this judgment will not happen during his own lifetime. Josiah gathers all Judah and Jerusalem’s people together and reads the entire book aloud to them personally, making a covenant before the Lord to walk after Him with all his heart and soul, and causes everyone present to join in this covenant as well, committing wholeheartedly to genuine reform.
Josiah’s reforms began years before the book of the law was even discovered, showing that his heart was already genuinely seeking God before he fully understood everything Scripture required. Once he did discover it, his immediate, tender-hearted response, rather than defensive dismissal, reveals exactly the kind of teachable humility that distinguished him from so many kings before him.
