After Hezekiah’s faithful reforms, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, invades Judah’s fortified cities, intending to conquer them for himself. Seeing this threat, Hezekiah takes counsel with his officials and strengthens Jerusalem’s defenses, stopping outside water sources, repairing the wall, building additional towers, and manufacturing weapons and shields in abundance, encouraging the people directly, “Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria… for there be more with us than with him: With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us.”
Sennacherib’s servants deliver a taunting message, mocking Hezekiah’s trust in the Lord, comparing Him to the powerless gods of already-conquered nations. Hezekiah and Isaiah the prophet “cry,” “za’aq” in Hebrew, to heaven in response, and the Lord sends an angel who destroys the mighty warriors, leaders, and captains within the Assyrian camp, forcing Sennacherib to return home in shame, where his own sons eventually assassinate him in his god’s temple.
The chapter briefly recounts Hezekiah’s illness and God’s promise of a confirming sign, though notes that Hezekiah’s heart was later lifted up with pride when Babylonian envoys visited, foolishly showing them all his treasures, until he humbles himself again, and wrath does not come upon Judah during his remaining lifetime. Hezekiah dies honored greatly by all Judah and Jerusalem, buried in the best of the sepulchres of David’s descendants, a fitting close to a reign that, despite occasional stumbles, remained fundamentally marked by genuine, remarkable faithfulness.
Hezekiah’s confident declaration that more is with them than with their enemy, since God Himself fights on their behalf, proved completely accurate when the entire Assyrian army was destroyed without Judah needing to fight a single battle. This dramatic deliverance stands as one of Chronicles’ clearest demonstrations that genuine trust in God consistently overcomes even the most overwhelming earthly threats.
