Once the Passover celebration concludes, all Israel present go throughout Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh, breaking images, cutting down groves, and throwing down high places and altars completely, before every Israelite returns to their own cities and possessions. Hezekiah appoints the divisions of priests and Levites according to their service, for burnt offerings, peace offerings, and giving thanks, exactly as David had originally organized centuries earlier.
Hezekiah commands the people living in Jerusalem to give the portion due the priests and Levites, so they could give themselves fully to the law of the Lord. When this command goes out, the children of Israel bring generously the “firstfruits,” “reshith” in Hebrew, of grain, wine, oil, honey, and every field’s produce, along with abundant tithes, bringing so much that they pile it up in heaps.
Hezekiah and the princes, seeing these enormous heaps, question the priests and Levites about it, and Azariah the chief priest confirms that since the people began bringing offerings into the Lord’s house, they have had plenty to eat with abundant leftovers, since the Lord had blessed His people so generously. Hezekiah orders storehouses prepared within the temple to hold these abundant offerings properly, and appoints faithful men to distribute portions fairly to priests and Levites throughout their cities, according to their genealogical divisions, ensuring this generous system of support would continue functioning properly and sustainably.
The overwhelming generosity of the people, bringing so much that it piled up in heaps beyond what could even be immediately used, shows the kind of abundant response genuine spiritual renewal can produce. Hezekiah’s careful follow-through, establishing proper storage and fair distribution systems, ensured this outpouring of devotion translated into lasting, sustainable support for ongoing worship.
