Jotham becomes king at twenty-five and does what is right in the Lord’s sight, exactly as his father Uzziah had done, though notably he does not enter the temple to burn incense as his father presumptuously did. The people, however, still act corruptly, though Jotham himself remains genuinely faithful throughout his reign, growing “mighty,” “gibbor” in Hebrew, because he prepares his ways before the Lord his God.
Jotham builds extensively throughout his kingdom, constructing the upper gate of the Lord’s house, building considerably on the wall of Ophel, and establishing cities throughout Judah’s mountains, along with castles and towers in the forests. He wars successfully against the Ammonites, defeating them and receiving substantial tribute in silver, wheat, and barley for three consecutive years.
The chapter closes noting that Jotham grew mighty because he consistently ordered his ways rightly before the Lord, a relatively brief but genuinely faithful reign that stands in quiet, steady contrast to both his father’s prideful downfall before him and his son Ahaz’s coming wickedness immediately after, a reminder that faithful, unremarkable consistency, without dramatic failure or scandal, still represents genuine, praiseworthy leadership.
Jotham’s reign, though relatively brief and lacking dramatic events, receives genuine praise precisely because he consistently ordered his ways before the Lord without his father’s prideful overreach. Sometimes the most commendable leadership isn’t marked by spectacular achievement, but by quiet, sustained faithfulness that avoids the pitfalls surrounding it on every side.
