Amaziah becomes king and does what is right, though not with a “perfect,” “shalem” in Hebrew, heart. Once firmly established, he executes his father’s murderers, but spares their children, following the law of Moses. Preparing for war against Edom, Amaziah hires 100,000 mercenary soldiers from Israel, but a man of God warns him that the Lord is not with Israel, urging him to send them home rather than risk being overthrown before God, since God has power to help or to overthrow.
Amaziah obeys, though it costs him the money already paid, and defeats Edom decisively in the Valley of Salt, killing ten thousand and capturing ten thousand more, whom his own remaining troops throw off a cliff. Tragically, Amaziah then brings back the gods of Edom, bowing down to them and burning incense to them, provoking the Lord’s anger. A prophet confronts him, asking why he would seek gods that could not even deliver their own people from his hand, but Amaziah dismisses him with threats.
Amaziah then foolishly challenges Jehoash, king of Israel, to battle, despite Jehoash’s parable-warning comparing Amaziah to a thistle demanding marriage with a great cedar. Israel defeats Judah decisively, capturing Amaziah, breaking down part of Jerusalem’s wall, and plundering the temple and palace treasuries. Amaziah is eventually killed in a conspiracy at Lachish, closing out a reign that began faithfully but ended in humiliating defeat and idolatry.
Amaziah’s decision to worship the very gods of the nation he had just defeated reveals a genuinely bizarre spiritual confusion, valuing idols that couldn’t even protect their own worshipers. His story shows how quickly early obedience can give way to prideful, irrational compromise once success breeds overconfidence rather than continued, humble dependence on God.
