Returning safely to Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat is confronted by Jehu the seer, who asks pointedly, “Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD?” warning that wrath from the Lord now rests upon him because of this, though acknowledging that good things are still found in him, since he removed idol groves from the land and prepared his heart to seek God.
Jehoshaphat responds not with defensiveness, but with renewed dedication, going out again among the people, from Beersheba to Ephraim’s hill country, bringing them back to the Lord God of their fathers. He appoints “judges,” “shophetim” in Hebrew, throughout the fortified cities of Judah, charging them directly, “Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment… let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.”
Jehoshaphat also establishes a central court in Jerusalem, staffed by Levites, priests, and chief fathers, to judge difficult cases, appointing Amariah the chief priest to oversee matters pertaining to the Lord, and Zebadiah to oversee matters pertaining to the king, instructing them to deal courageously, with the Lord being with those who do well, establishing a genuinely just, God-honoring judicial system throughout his entire kingdom.
Jehoshaphat’s response to Jehu’s confrontation, immediate, genuine correction rather than defensive resistance, shows real spiritual maturity in receiving honest rebuke. His careful instructions to Judah’s new judges, reminding them they ultimately judge on God’s behalf rather than merely representing human authority, established accountability rooted in genuine reverence rather than mere legal procedure.
