When Baasha, king of Israel, builds a fortress at Ramah threatening Jerusalem’s access, Asa, rather than trusting the Lord as he once did against Zerah’s far larger army, takes silver and gold from the temple and palace treasuries, sending it to Benhadad, king of Syria, persuading him to break his treaty with Israel and attack instead, forcing Baasha to abandon his fortification project.
The prophet Hanani confronts Asa directly, rebuking him for relying on the king of Syria rather than on the Lord, reminding him of his earlier, greater victory over the massive Ethiopian and Libyan army, since the Lord’s eyes “run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.” Hanani warns that Asa has done “foolishly,” “sakal” in Hebrew, and that from this point forward, he will have wars.
Enraged rather than repentant, Asa imprisons Hanani and oppresses some of the people at the same time, revealing a troubling hardness that had crept into his once-faithful heart. In his later years, Asa develops a severe disease in his feet, yet even then, rather than seeking the Lord, he seeks only physicians, and dies after a forty-one-year reign, still honored with an elaborate funeral, but leaving behind a legacy noticeably marred by this final, disappointing chapter of spiritual decline.
Asa’s troubling shift from wholehearted trust in his youth to self-reliant compromise in his later years shows that past faithfulness never guarantees continued faithfulness without ongoing, deliberate dependence on God. His angry response to honest correction, rather than humble repentance, reveals exactly how far his heart had drifted from the man who once prayed so confidently against overwhelming odds.
