The Spirit of God comes upon Azariah, who meets Asa and delivers a message of encouragement, that the Lord is with him while he remains with the Lord, but will be found if sought, though forsaking Him brings abandonment in return. Azariah describes a difficult period Israel once experienced without the true God, without a teaching priest, and without law, until they turned to the Lord in their distress and found Him, urging Asa and Judah to be strong, since their work will be rewarded.
Encouraged by this prophecy, Asa takes courage and removes remaining “abominable idols,” “gillulim” in Hebrew, throughout Judah, Benjamin, and cities he had captured in Ephraim’s hill country, renewing the altar of the Lord before the temple porch. He gathers all Judah, Benjamin, and those from Ephraim, Manasseh, and Simeon who had defected to him, seeing that the Lord his God was with him.
The people gather at Jerusalem and enter into a solemn covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and soul, agreeing that whoever refuses to seek the Lord God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great. They swear this oath with a loud voice, shouting, trumpets, and cornets, rejoicing greatly at swearing with their whole desire, and the Lord grants them rest on every side because they sought Him with genuine, wholehearted purpose. Asa even removes his own grandmother Maachah from her position as queen mother for making an idol, cutting it down and burning it, demonstrating that this reform reached even into his own family.
Asa’s willingness to remove even his own grandmother’s influence for the sake of true worship demonstrates real courage in prioritizing God’s honor over family comfort and convenience. This chapter’s emphasis on the entire nation swearing wholehearted devotion together shows genuine reform reaching far beyond individual leadership into the fabric of the whole community’s shared commitment.
