Abijah becomes king of Judah and goes to war against Jeroboam with four hundred thousand chosen men, facing Jeroboam’s eight hundred thousand men arrayed for battle. Before the fighting begins, Abijah stands on Mount Zemaraim and delivers a bold speech, reminding Jeroboam and all Israel that the Lord God of Israel gave the kingdom to David and his sons forever by a “covenant,” “beriyth” in Hebrew, of salt, an unbreakable agreement, yet Jeroboam, Solomon’s own servant, rose up and rebelled against his master.
Abijah contrasts Judah’s continued faithful priesthood, following God’s prescribed order with proper sacrifices, showbread, and golden lampstands tended daily, against Israel’s idolatrous golden calves and illegitimate priests, anyone willing to consecrate himself with a bull and seven rams. He warns Israel plainly not to fight against the Lord God of their fathers, “for ye shall not prosper.”
While Abijah speaks, Jeroboam sets an ambush behind Judah’s army, and when Judah realizes they are surrounded front and back, they cry out to the Lord, and the priests sound their trumpets. God strikes Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah, resulting in a devastating defeat for Israel, five hundred thousand chosen men slain, “because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers.” Judah prevails decisively, and Abijah captures several cities from Jeroboam, whose power never recovers during Abijah’s remaining lifetime.
Judah’s dramatic victory against overwhelming numerical odds came specifically because they cried out to the Lord in their moment of crisis, rather than relying on strategy or manpower alone. This decisive battle reinforces Chronicles’ consistent message, that genuine reliance on God, even when facing seemingly impossible circumstances, brings victory that human calculation alone could never achieve.
