Once Rehoboam’s kingdom becomes established and strong, he forsakes the law of the Lord, and all Israel follows his example. Because of this “unfaithfulness,” “ma’al” in Hebrew, Shishak, king of Egypt, invades Judah with an overwhelming force, twelve hundred chariots, sixty thousand horsemen, and countless soldiers from Egypt, Libya, and Ethiopia, capturing Judah’s fortified cities and advancing all the way to Jerusalem.
The prophet Shemaiah confronts Rehoboam and the princes of Judah, gathered together in Jerusalem out of fear of Shishak, declaring God’s message plainly, “Ye have forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak.” The princes and the king humble themselves, admitting, “The LORD is righteous,” and because of this genuine humility, God relents somewhat, promising not to destroy them completely, though they will still become Shishak’s servants, so they might learn the difference between serving God and serving earthly kingdoms instead.
Shishak takes the treasures of the Lord’s house and the king’s house, including the golden shields Solomon had made, which Rehoboam replaces with shields of bronze instead. Despite this humbling setback, some genuine good remains found in Rehoboam, and though he continues doing evil by not fully setting his heart to seek the Lord, the chapter closes noting his death after seventeen years reigning in Jerusalem, succeeded by his son Abijah.
This chapter perfectly illustrates the theological pattern Chronicles consistently emphasizes throughout the entire book, unfaithfulness bringing swift consequence, but genuine humility, even after failure, still bringing real mercy. Rehoboam’s brief but sincere humbling before God prevented total destruction, showing that repentance always remains available, however late it comes.
