Paul explains that the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their conscience seared as with a hot iron, forbidding marriage and commanding abstinence from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth, since every creature of God is good, and nothing refused if received with thanksgiving, being sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
Paul instructs that if Timothy puts these things before the brethren, he will be a good “minister,” “diakonos” in Greek, of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and good doctrine he has carefully followed. He urges Timothy to refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and instead exercise himself unto godliness, since bodily exercise profits little, but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
Paul urges Timothy to let no one despise his youth, but to be an example of the believers in word, conduct, love, spirit, faith, and purity, giving attendance to reading, exhortation, and doctrine until Paul comes. He tells Timothy not to neglect the gift within him, given by prophecy with the laying on of the presbytery’s hands, urging him to meditate on these things and give himself wholly to them, so his progress may be evident to everyone, taking heed to himself and his doctrine, continuing in them, since doing so will save both himself and those who hear him.
Paul’s warning about coming apostasy through false asceticism, forbidding marriage and certain foods, shows that spiritual error often disguises itself as extra devotion rather than obvious rebellion. His encouragement that Timothy’s youth need not disqualify him from respect, provided his character genuinely models what he teaches, offers timeless encouragement to young leaders anywhere facing similar doubt about their own credibility.
