Paul declares this a faithful saying, that if anyone desires the office of a “bishop,” “episkopos” in Greek, meaning overseer, he desires a good work, but such a person must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy of money, but patient, not a brawler, not covetous, ruling his own house well, having his children in subjection with all gravity, and not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
Paul explains such a person must also have a good report from those outside the church, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Similarly, deacons must be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of money, holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience, first being proved, then serving if found blameless. Their wives likewise must be grave, not slanderers, sober, and faithful in all things, and deacons must be the husband of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well, since serving well in this role purchases good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Paul explains he writes these things hoping to come to Timothy shortly, but in case he is delayed, so Timothy would know how to behave in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. He closes affirming that without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness, God manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, and received up into glory.
Paul’s detailed qualifications for church leadership emphasize proven character and household integrity far more than talent or charisma, insisting that how someone manages their own family reliably predicts how they will manage responsibility within the church. This chapter reminds every generation that leadership qualification is fundamentally about tested, consistent character rather than mere ability or ambition.
