Paul urges the Thessalonians to continue walking and pleasing God, abounding more and more in it, reminding them of the commandments he gave them through the Lord Jesus. He explains that God’s will is their sanctification, that they should abstain from fornication, each learning to possess their own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in the lustful passion of Gentiles who do not know God, since God has called believers to holiness, not uncleanness.
Paul instructs them regarding brotherly love, noting they are already taught by God to love one another, and encourages them to increase in it more and more, aspiring to live quietly, mind their own business, and work with their own hands, so they may walk honestly toward outsiders and lack nothing themselves. Paul then addresses a specific concern about believers who have died, not wanting them to be ignorant or to sorrow like others who have no hope.
Paul explains that since they believe Jesus died and rose again, God will likewise bring with Him those who “sleep,” “koimao” in Greek, a common euphemism for death, in Jesus. He describes the Lord Himself descending from heaven with a shout, the voice of the archangel, and the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first, followed by living believers caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, “and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” Paul closes urging them to comfort one another with these words.
Paul’s teaching about believers who have died wasn’t meant as abstract theology, but as genuine comfort for people actively grieving fellow believers, worried they had somehow missed out on Christ’s return. His instruction to comfort one another with these specific words shows theology functioning exactly as it should, providing real, practical hope in the middle of real grief.
