Paul reminds the Thessalonians that his visit to them was not in vain, since even after suffering and being shamefully treated at Philippi, he and his companions were bold in God to speak the gospel despite much opposition. He insists his exhortation came not from deceit, uncleanness, or guile, but as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, speaking to please God rather than men, never using flattering words or a cloak of covetousness, seeking no glory from people.
Paul describes his conduct among them tenderly, comparing himself to a nursing mother “gentle,” “epios” in Greek, cherishing her own children, being willing to share not only the gospel but their own lives as well, since the Thessalonians had become so dear to them. He reminds them of his labor and travail, working night and day so as not to be a financial burden while preaching God’s gospel to them, and how he exhorted, comforted, and charged every one of them individually, as a father does his own children, that they would walk worthy of God, who called them into His own kingdom and glory.
Paul expresses genuine gratitude that when they received God’s word, they welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God, which effectively works in those who believe. He acknowledges that they, like the churches in Judaea, suffered persecution from their own countrymen, and expresses his own intense desire to see them again, explaining that Satan hindered his return, closing with genuine affection, calling them his hope, joy, and crown of rejoicing in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ at His coming.
Paul’s tender comparison of himself to a nursing mother reveals a side of apostolic ministry easy to overlook amid all the theology and doctrine, genuine, personal affection for the people he served. His insistence on working to avoid being a financial burden, combined with this deep emotional care, shows integrity and love operating together throughout his entire ministry.
