Saul, a tall, impressive young man from the tribe of Benjamin, “from his shoulders and upward higher than any of the people,” is sent by his father Kish to search for some lost donkeys. After searching unsuccessfully through several regions, Saul’s servant suggests they consult a “seer,” “ro’eh” in Hebrew, in a nearby city, since this man of God can reliably tell them which way to go.
Unknown to Saul, the Lord had already revealed to Samuel the previous day that He would send him a man from Benjamin to anoint as prince over Israel, one who would save the people from the Philistines. When Saul approaches Samuel in the city gate asking directions to the seer’s house, Samuel identifies himself immediately and tells Saul not to worry about the donkeys, since they have already been found, and that Saul himself, along with his father’s house, is the desire of all Israel.
Bewildered by this response, given his humble tribal standing, Saul is nonetheless brought to a place of honor at a feast, seated at the head of thirty guests, and given the choicest portion of meat reserved specifically for him. The next morning, Samuel walks with Saul to the edge of the city, sends the servant ahead, and prepares to reveal to Saul privately “the word of God.”
Saul set out on an entirely ordinary errand, searching for lost animals, and ended up walking straight into God’s larger plan for his life without any idea it was happening. Sometimes the most significant turning points arrive disguised as mundane, everyday tasks, discovered only in hindsight to have been leading somewhere far bigger all along.
