The Philistine priests and diviners advise that the ark must be returned with a guilt offering, five golden tumors and five golden mice, representing the plague and the mice that have also ravaged their land, warning against hardening their hearts as Pharaoh and the Egyptians once did. They devise a careful test, placing the ark on a new cart pulled by two milk cows who have never been yoked, separated from their calves, reasoning that if the cows instinctively head straight toward Israel rather than back to their own calves, they will know beyond doubt that this disaster truly came from the Lord.
Remarkably, the cows go straight along the highway toward Bethshemesh, lowing as they go, without turning aside to the right or left, confirming unmistakably that God Himself had directed this entire disaster and its resolution. The people of Bethshemesh, harvesting wheat in the valley, rejoice greatly to see the ark returning, and offer the cows themselves as a burnt offering to the Lord, along with the golden objects sent as a guilt offering.
Tragically, some men of Bethshemesh look carelessly into the ark itself, and the Lord strikes fifty thousand and seventy men for this irreverence, causing the people to mourn greatly and ask fearfully, “Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God?” They send word to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, who come and take the ark to the house of Abinadab, consecrating his son Eleazar to keep watch over it there for what becomes twenty years.
Even after the ark’s safe return, careless disregard for its holiness still brought serious consequences at Bethshemesh. This entire episode, from Dagon’s collapse to this final tragedy, reinforces the same consistent lesson, God’s presence demands genuine reverence, regardless of whether it’s approached by hostile enemies or by His own careless people.
