As the Philistines gather for another major battle against Israel, Saul grows deeply afraid, and when he inquires of the Lord, receives no answer at all, neither through dreams, the sacred lots called Urim, nor through prophets. Desperate, Saul instructs his servants to find him a woman with a “familiar spirit,” “ob” in Hebrew, describing a medium or necromancer, even though he himself had previously outlawed and removed all such mediums from the land.
Disguising himself, Saul visits a medium at Endor by night, asking her to bring up Samuel from the dead. When Samuel actually appears, the woman cries out in terror, recognizing Saul despite his disguise. Samuel, disturbed at being disturbed, asks Saul why he has called him up. Saul explains his desperate situation, that God has departed from him and no longer answers, whether by prophets or dreams, and he needs guidance for the coming battle.
Samuel delivers a devastating final message, that the Lord has indeed departed from Saul and become his enemy, doing exactly what he had previously warned would happen, tearing the kingdom from him and giving it to David. Samuel predicts that Saul and his sons will be with him the next day, meaning they will die in the coming battle, and that Israel’s army will be delivered into Philistine hands. Saul falls to the ground, overcome with fear and weakness, having eaten nothing all day, and though initially refusing, is finally persuaded to eat something before departing that same night toward his final, devastating battle.
Saul’s desperate turn to necromancy, something he had personally outlawed, reveals just how far his relationship with God had deteriorated by this point in his life. When God’s silence became unbearable, Saul sought answers through forbidden means rather than genuine repentance, a tragic final chapter in a story that had so much early promise.
