The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Spear” it comes from the Hebrew Word “chanith” which means “spear.”
For a second time, David finds Saul completely vulnerable, and again chooses mercy over vengeance. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Samuel 26.
The Ziphites again betray David’s location to Saul, who pursues him once more with three thousand chosen men. David, scouting Saul’s camp at night, sneaks in with Abishai while everyone sleeps deeply, since a divine sleep from the Lord has fallen upon them. Abishai urges David to let him kill Saul with his own “spear,” “chanith” in Hebrew, insisting God has delivered him into their hand, but David again refuses, unwilling to harm the Lord’s anointed, trusting instead that God will deal with Saul in His own time and way.
Instead of killing him, David takes Saul’s spear and water jug from right beside his head, and departs safely to a distant hilltop. From there, David calls out loudly, waking Saul’s camp and rebuking Abner, Saul’s military commander, for failing to properly guard his king, since David could easily have killed him. He shows Saul his own spear and water jug as undeniable proof, once again, of his restraint and innocent intentions toward him.
Saul, recognizing David’s voice, again confesses he has sinned, acknowledging he has played the fool and erred greatly, blessing David and predicting his future success. David responds that he trusts the Lord to reward each person according to their righteousness and faithfulness, and the two part ways once more, Saul returning home while David continues on his own path, still uncertain whether this reconciliation will actually last this time.
David’s second refusal to kill Saul, even after receiving nearly identical reassurance from his own men that this was clearly God’s providence at work, shows this restraint was a settled conviction rather than a one-time emotional decision. Consistency in doing what’s right, even when circumstances repeatedly seem to justify otherwise, reveals real character.
