Samuel dies, and all Israel mourns him. David, in the wilderness of Paran, sends messengers to Nabal, a wealthy but harsh man whose name, “nabal” in Hebrew, literally means “fool,” politely requesting provisions in exchange for the protection David’s men had provided his shepherds. Nabal responds with insulting contempt, refusing to acknowledge David at all, and David, furious, prepares to attack and kill every male in Nabal’s household.
A servant urgently informs Abigail, Nabal’s wise and beautiful wife, of the danger her husband’s foolishness has created. Abigail acts quickly and decisively, gathering generous provisions and riding out to intercept David before he reaches Nabal’s household, falling at his feet and pleading eloquently for mercy, taking responsibility for her husband’s offense herself, and reminding David that avoiding needless bloodshed now will spare him regret once the Lord establishes him as ruler over Israel exactly as promised.
David, moved by her wisdom, blesses God for sending her to prevent him from avenging himself with his own hand, and accepts her gift, calling off the planned attack. When Abigail tells Nabal the next morning, after his drunken feast has ended, his heart fails him and he becomes like a stone, dying about ten days later when the Lord strikes him. Hearing of Nabal’s death, David sends for Abigail and takes her as his wife, along with Ahinoam of Jezreel, while Saul had already given Michal, David’s first wife, to another man.
Abigail’s quick, decisive wisdom prevented David from carrying needless bloodguilt into his future kingship, showing real courage in confronting a dangerous situation her own husband’s foolishness had created. David’s gratitude for being restrained from taking vengeance himself echoes the same restraint he had already shown toward Saul in the cave.
