David risks everything to save a city under attack, only to learn its people might betray him afterward. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Samuel 23.
Hearing that the Philistines are raiding Keilah, David inquires of the Lord whether he should attack them, and receives confirmation, defeating the Philistines decisively and saving the city’s inhabitants. When Saul hears David is now confined within a walled city, he prepares to besiege it, confident God has delivered David into his hand. David, sensing danger, inquires of the Lord again through Abiathar’s ephod, learning that the men of Keilah would indeed hand him over to Saul if he stayed, despite having just saved them.
David and his now six hundred men flee into the wilderness, moving constantly from place to place to avoid capture, while Saul “sought,” “baqash” in Hebrew, him every day without God delivering David into his hand. During this period, Jonathan finds David in the wilderness of Ziph and strengthens his hand in God, reassuring him that he will indeed become king, and that Jonathan himself will gladly serve as second to him, a fact Saul himself already knows.
The Ziphites, however, betray David’s location to Saul, and Saul closes in, nearly capturing David on opposite sides of a mountain, until a messenger urgently calls Saul away to deal with a Philistine invasion elsewhere, providing David a narrow, providential escape. The place is memorably named Selahammahlekoth, meaning “the rock of divisions,” reflecting how narrowly this pursuit was interrupted.
David’s willingness to inquire of the Lord repeatedly, even about uncomfortable, potentially betraying information from people he had just risked his life to save, shows genuine dependence on God’s guidance rather than his own assumptions. That same God who revealed Keilah’s betrayal also orchestrated the timely interruption that saved David from Saul’s closing trap.
