Hannah prays a triumphant song of praise, declaring “mine heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD,” the Hebrew word for horn, “qeren,” symbolizing strength and dignity. She praises God as one who brings low and lifts up, who makes poor and makes rich, who raises the beggar from the dust to sit among princes, foreshadowing themes that will echo throughout the rest of the book, God reversing human expectations of who deserves honor.
Meanwhile, Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, serve as priests but behave wickedly, taking meat forcibly from worshipers’ sacrifices before it is properly offered to the Lord, and committing sexual immorality with women serving at the tabernacle entrance. Eli hears of this and rebukes his sons, but they refuse to listen, and Scripture notes ominously that the Lord intended to slay them for their persistent sin.
Meanwhile, young Samuel continues growing in the Lord’s presence, and his mother Hannah visits him yearly, bringing him a small coat she has made, while Eli blesses Elkanah and Hannah, and the Lord blesses them with more children. A man of God comes to Eli, delivering a severe prophecy against his household, that because Eli honored his sons above the Lord, his family’s priestly line will be cut off, and both Hophni and Phinehas will die on the same day as a confirming sign.
Eli’s failure wasn’t outright wickedness himself, but a passive unwillingness to properly restrain his own sons’ corruption, even after recognizing it clearly. This chapter is a sobering warning that tolerating serious sin in those we love and have influence over carries real, lasting consequences, regardless of our own personal integrity.
