The Philistines and Israelites face off in the valley of Elah, and Goliath, a Philistine champion over nine feet tall wearing heavy armor, comes out daily for forty days challenging Israel to send a champion to fight him one-on-one, taunting and defying “cherpah” in Hebrew, the armies of the living God, while Saul and all Israel remain terrified. David, sent by his father to bring supplies to his brothers serving in the army, hears Goliath’s taunt and is outraged, asking, “who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
Brought before Saul, David volunteers to fight Goliath, explaining that as a shepherd, he has already killed a lion and a bear that attacked his flock, and that the Lord who delivered him from those beasts will deliver him from this Philistine as well. Saul offers David his own armor, but David, unaccustomed to it, removes it and instead takes his staff, sling, and five smooth stones from a brook.
As Goliath approaches, cursing David by his gods and mocking his youth, David responds with remarkable confidence. “Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts… this day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand… that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.” David runs toward Goliath, slings a stone that strikes him in the forehead, and Goliath falls face down. David uses Goliath’s own sword to kill him, and the Philistine army, seeing their champion dead, flees in terror while Israel pursues and routs them completely.
David’s confidence facing Goliath never rested on his own skill with a sling, but on his conviction that this battle ultimately belonged to God, not to him. His declaration that all the earth would know there is a God in Israel reveals his real motivation, not personal glory, but making God’s power unmistakably clear to everyone watching.
