The Chosen Key Word in this Chapter is “Anoint” it comes from the Hebrew Word “mashach” which means “to anoint.”
Samuel pours oil on Saul’s head in private, then Israel confirms him publicly by lot. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Samuel 10.
Samuel takes a vial of oil and pours it on Saul’s head, “anointing,” “mashach” in Hebrew, him as captain over God’s inheritance, sealing this act with a kiss. Samuel gives Saul several specific signs that will happen that very day, confirming God’s hand is truly on him, culminating in an encounter with a group of prophets, where the Spirit of the Lord will come mightily upon Saul and he will prophesy along with them, becoming “turned into another man.”
Every sign happens exactly as Samuel predicted, and when Saul meets the prophets, the Spirit of God comes upon him and he prophesies among them, astonishing people who knew him previously, prompting the proverb, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” Meanwhile, Samuel gathers all Israel together at Mizpeh, reminding them again that they have rejected their God who saved them from all their troubles, yet have demanded a king anyway.
Samuel brings the tribes forward one by one, and through casting lots, Saul is chosen, though when they search for him, he is found hiding among the baggage, reflecting his own hesitation about this enormous responsibility. Once found and presented, Saul stands head and shoulders above everyone else, and the people shout, “God save the king.” Samuel explains the manner of the kingdom to the people and writes it in a book laid up before the Lord. Some worthless men despise Saul, questioning how he can possibly save them, but Saul, remarkably, holds his peace.
Saul’s instinct to hide among the baggage when it came time to be publicly confirmed as king reveals genuine hesitancy at the start of his reign, a striking contrast to the confident, imposing figure he appeared to be physically. Even someone chosen and anointed directly by God can still approach that calling with real uncertainty and reluctance.
