Peter, an elder himself, exhorts the elders among them to feed the flock of God which is among them, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly, not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind, neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock, so that when the chief Shepherd shall appear, they shall receive a crown of glory that does not fade away.
Peter urges the younger to submit themselves to the elder, and all of them to be subject one to another, and be clothed with “humility,” “tapeinophrosune” in Greek, since God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble, urging them to humble themselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt them in due time, casting all their care upon Him, for He cares for them.
Peter urges them to be sober, be vigilant, since their adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour, whom they should resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in their brethren who are in the world, promising that the God of all grace, who has called them unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after they have suffered a while, will make them perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle them, closing this letter with his familiar benediction, “To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen,” and warm personal greetings sent through his companion Silvanus.
Peter’s beloved invitation, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you, offers genuine, comforting permission to release anxiety into God’s capable hands rather than carrying it alone and unsustainably. His vivid warning about the devil prowling like a roaring lion seeking prey balances this comfort with genuine, sober vigilance, reminding readers that real spiritual danger exists alongside real divine care and provision.
