Peter urges his readers to lay aside all malice, guile, hypocrisies, envies, and evil speaking, desiring the sincere milk of the word, that they may grow thereby, since they have tasted that the Lord is gracious, coming to Him as to a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Peter describes them remarkably as a chosen “generation,” “genos” in Greek, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people, that they should show forth the praises of Him who has called them out of darkness into His marvellous light, who in times past were not a people, but are now the people of God, urging them as strangers and pilgrims to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul, having their conversation honest among the Gentiles, that whereas they speak against them as evildoers, they may by their good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
Peter urges submission to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, since so is the will of God, that with well doing they may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men, urging servants to be subject to their masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward, since this is thankworthy, if for conscience toward God a man endures grief, suffering wrongfully, describing how Christ also suffered for them, leaving them an example that they should follow His steps, who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth, who His own self bore their sins in His own body on the tree, that they, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness, by whose stripes they were healed.
Peter’s remarkable description of believers as a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation elevates their identity far beyond mere individual salvation toward genuine, corporate purpose and dignity. His challenging call to follow Christ’s example of suffering wrongfully without retaliation offers a demanding but genuinely transformative model for responding to injustice with patient endurance rather than vengeful reaction.
