Solomon builds his own palace and commissions an artisan to craft the temple’s most impressive furnishings. Welcome to Bible Life Basics Chapter Reviews, I am Chris and this is 1 Kings 7.
Solomon spends thirteen years building his own house, including the house of the forest of Lebanon and a hall of pillars, along with a house for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had married. He sends for Hiram, a skilled craftsman from Tyre, filled with wisdom, understanding, and cunning to work in bronze, and commissions him to create the temple’s bronze furnishings.
Hiram casts two enormous bronze pillars named Jachin and Boaz, standing in the temple porch, along with an enormous molten sea, a massive bronze basin resting on twelve oxen, used for the priests’ washing, holding two thousand baths of water. He also crafts ten smaller bronze bases with wheels, each supporting its own laver, along with pots, shovels, and basins, all made of burnished bronze in such great quantity that their weight could not be determined.
Solomon also makes the golden furnishings for the temple, the altar of gold, the table of showbread, ten golden lampstands, and various gold vessels, spoons, and instruments, along with the hinges for the doors of both the inner oracle and the temple itself, all overlaid with gold. Once all the work Solomon had commissioned for the house of the Lord is finished, he brings in the silver, gold, and vessels his father David had dedicated, placing them among the treasures of the house of the Lord.
The staggering scale and craftsmanship poured into these furnishings, bronze pillars, an enormous molten sea, golden lampstands, reflects Israel’s genuine effort to honor God with their absolute best resources and skill. Excellence in these details mattered enough to warrant years of dedicated craftsmanship rather than a rushed or minimal effort.
