Hiram, king of Tyre, sends servants to Solomon, having always loved David. Solomon explains that David could not build a house for the Lord’s name because of the wars surrounding him, but now that God has given him rest on every side, with no adversary or evil occurrence, he intends to build this house, exactly as God had promised David his son would do.
Solomon requests that Hiram’s men cut “cedar,” “erez” in Hebrew, trees from Lebanon, since Sidonian workers have particular skill in cutting timber, offering to pay whatever wages Hiram sets and to provide food for his household in exchange. Hiram rejoices greatly at this request, blessing the Lord for giving David such a wise son to rule this great people, and agrees to provide cedar and fir trees, floating them by sea to wherever Solomon designates, in exchange for wheat and pure oil for his own household.
Solomon raises a levy of thirty thousand men from all Israel, sending them to Lebanon in rotating shifts of ten thousand each month, along with seventy thousand who bear burdens and eighty thousand stonecutters in the mountains, overseen by thirty-three hundred officers. They prepare great, costly stones for the temple’s foundation, cutting and preparing timber and stone at the quarry itself, so that neither hammer, axe, nor any iron tool is heard at the actual building site during construction.
The careful, cooperative partnership between Solomon and Hiram, a foreign king genuinely rejoicing over Israel’s wise new ruler, shows how God’s blessing on Solomon extended influence well beyond Israel’s own borders. This massive undertaking required extensive preparation and international cooperation long before a single stone was actually laid in Jerusalem.
