Solomon organizes his kingdom with a comprehensive list of officials, including priests, scribes, a recorder, and twelve regional officers responsible for providing food for the king’s household one month each year. The text describes the enormous daily provisions required for Solomon’s court, along with vast numbers of horses and chariots.
Judah and Israel dwell safely, “every man under his vine and under his fig tree,” from Dan to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon, and he has dominion over all the kingdoms from the river to the land of the Philistines and the border of Egypt, with these regions bringing tribute and serving him throughout his reign, enjoying a genuine, widespread “peace,” “shalom” in Hebrew, on every side.
God gives Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding great, and largeness of heart, “even as the sand that is on the sea shore,” so that his wisdom exceeds all the wisdom of the east country and Egypt, wiser than any man of his time. He speaks three thousand proverbs, and his songs number a thousand and five, speaking knowledgeably of trees, beasts, fowl, creeping things, and fish. People come from all nations to hear his wisdom, sent by kings who had heard of his fame throughout the world.
The description of Israel dwelling safely, every man under his own vine and fig tree, captures a rare season of genuine, widespread peace and prosperity throughout the entire kingdom. Solomon’s wisdom extended into nearly every field of knowledge, drawing visitors and admiration from nations far beyond Israel’s own borders.
