Solomon marries Pharaoh’s daughter and continues sacrificing at the high places, since the temple has not yet been built. At Gibeon, the Lord appears to Solomon in a dream by night, saying, “Ask what I shall give thee.” Solomon responds with remarkable humility, acknowledging the great mercy shown to his father David, and describing himself as merely “a little child,” unsure how to lead such a great, numerous people, asking God for “wisdom,” “chokmah” in Hebrew, an understanding heart to judge the people and discern between good and evil.
This request pleases God greatly, since Solomon did not ask for long life, riches, or the death of his enemies. God grants Solomon a wise and understanding heart unlike anyone before or after him, and, because he asked for this rather than selfish things, adds riches and honor as well, promising also long life if Solomon continues walking in His ways as David did. Solomon wakes, realizing it was a dream, and returns to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices before the Lord.
Solomon’s wisdom is immediately tested when two harlots come before him, both claiming the same living baby as their own, since one woman’s child died in the night. Solomon proposes dividing the living child in half with a sword, and when the true mother cries out desperately to give the baby to the other woman rather than see it killed, while the false mother agrees to the division, Solomon immediately recognizes the true mother and awards her the child. All Israel hears of this judgment and fears the king, recognizing that the wisdom of God is truly in him.
Solomon’s request for wisdom rather than wealth or power reveals genuine understanding of what real leadership actually requires. His clever test with the two mothers shows exactly what that granted wisdom looked like in practice, discerning genuine truth not through evidence alone, but through insight into human hearts and motives.
