After three years of drought, God sends Elijah to present himself to Ahab, promising to send rain. Along the way, Elijah encounters Obadiah, a devout servant who has secretly hidden a hundred prophets of the Lord from Jezebel’s murderous purge. When Elijah finally confronts Ahab, he challenges him to gather all Israel, along with the four hundred fifty prophets of Baal and four hundred prophets of the groves who eat at Jezebel’s table, to Mount Carmel for a decisive test.
Elijah proposes a straightforward contest, two bulls prepared as sacrifices, with the god who answers by “fire,” “esh” in Hebrew, proving himself the true God. The prophets of Baal cry out and cut themselves from morning until evening, but nothing happens, while Elijah mocks them, suggesting their god might be sleeping or on a journey. When his turn comes, Elijah rebuilds the Lord’s broken-down altar, deliberately soaks his sacrifice and the surrounding trench with water three times, then prays a simple, direct prayer, and fire falls from heaven, consuming the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the dust, and even the water in the trench.
The people fall on their faces, declaring, “The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.” Elijah has the prophets of Baal seized and executed at the brook Kishon. He then climbs Carmel and prays earnestly for rain, sending his servant to look toward the sea seven times until finally a small cloud appears, growing into a great rainstorm. The Spirit of the Lord empowers Elijah to outrun Ahab’s chariot all the way to Jezreel as the drought finally, dramatically ends.
Elijah’s confident, almost mocking challenge to Baal’s prophets, followed by his careful soaking of the altar to eliminate any doubt about the coming miracle, reveals real boldness rooted in genuine faith rather than showmanship. This dramatic contest settled decisively, at least for that generation, exactly who Israel’s true God actually was.
